Broke Magazine’s Guide To Gottwood 2024

This weekend, Gottwood fans will return to the festival’s stomping grounds of Carreglwyd Estate, and for anyone making the trek to Anglesa, we’re in for a messy weekend of wobs and Welsh countryside. An underrated gem in the electronic festival scene, Gottwood, aside from its immense sonic soundscape and unique ear for underground music, comes with the bonus of stunning sights, picture green hills, the English sea sitting right on its doorstep and a f*ck load of sheep baaa-ing along to some bangers (it wouldn’t be Wales without ’em).

Described as a “mystical little party hidden in the middle of the woods” It’s quickly becoming a fan favourite among music lovers across the country as this boutique event offers a truly unique, alternate reality compared to the vast majority of other festivals. The Welsh woodland provides an amazing backdrop to a festival crammed with the best underground electronic music you’re likely to witness live this year.

Expect a close-knit community feel where you can easily find yourself dancing next to both seasoned festival-goers and first-timers alike. The lineup is meticulously curated to include the finest in underground electronic music alongside returning names that you won’t want to miss, ensuring every beat keeps you moving and toe-tappin’, so before packing our bags and mentally preparing for our journey to Holyhead, we’ve pulled together a guide to Gottwood 2024 rounding up all of the goated artists, ride-or-die DJs and Broke Magazine must-sees we’ll be smack-bang in front of the decks for this year…

THURSDAY

MUST SEE:

Make A Dance

Upbeat tongle with some European flare is what to expect from Make A Dance, the love child of Josh Ludlow & Ben Lewis. This duo is an electric trance and is super wobby. They are the perfect act to catch on Thursday to gently ease your way into the weekend.

DONT MISS:

Girls Don’t Sync

Girls Don’t Sync is an all-female collective of DJs, producers, and curators injecting much-needed inclusivity and energy into underrepresented dancefloors worldwide. Formed by Matty Chiabi, Sophia Violet, Hannah Lynch, and G33 in the summer of 2021, they quickly gained attention with one of the most-watched Mixmag Lab sessions of the year. They are bringing the garage girl vibes to Wales and we are here for it!

KT B2B Papa Nugs

If you’re in search of some weebily woobilies you’ll wanna make this set. Papa Nugs is known for dropping tunes that can massage your mind into a different dimension and with mix-master KT returning to Gottwood for this B2B, expect to lose a few hours in front of whichever stage is lucky enough to host them.

Samurai Breaks

If you’re searching for a skank, make sure you seek out Samurai Breaks, his experimental version of drum and bass is fast-paced with a tinny undertone and the occasional sexy mew mew thrown into the mix (if there was ever a musical version of edging it’s this).

FRIDAY

MUST SEE:

Laidlaw

Buzz buzz – Many people know Laidlaw from his iconic BeeYou parties here in London. But he is one for mixing records and my gosh is it always a vibe. Expect ultimate wobs and unmatched vibes from the set as the house tech comes to life. We interviewed Laid last year and we are sure to catch him again this year…

Peach

If you’re planning to tune into your spiritual side over the weekend (what better place to do it than surrounded by nature and godly tunes) seek out Peach, a psychic and DJ tuning into the other side with her music, she’s known for making the ethereal electronic and her sets are trippy af.

DON’T MISS:

Marcelina Wick

Swinging between influences of techno, hardstyle, bopping house and sound effects (that always work no matter how random) you honestly never know what you’ll get at a Marcelina Wick set, the only thing guaranteed is goated mixes and a good time, so, respectfully, get your ass to those decks! (We’ve been stans of her London based parties in Hackney Wick and can’t wait to see what she brings to Wales this year).

Lukas Wigflex

If you’re into experimental music that sounds like a mix between the start of an artistic 90s sci-fi movie and a frog reverberating beats underwater (which is as on-brand for Gottwood as it gets) you’re gonna wanna see at least a snippet of Lukas Wigflex’s set amongst all the bouncing between stages.

SATURDAY

MUST SEE:

Phone Traxxx

Upbeat and boppy is what to expect from Phone Traxxx – a top contender on the lineup and one that people won’t be able to pull themselves away from. This set is guaranteed to be a soul-tingling experience through and through. We want those speakers on full volume as Phone Traxxx penetrates our eardrums!

DON’T MISS:

Crazy P Soundsystem

These guys have been champions of festivals for years now, they are always headlining festival season across the UK and there is a reason why – the classic tracks that everyone sings along to. We last saw Danielle who wore a stunning green playsuit and cream cowboy hat at this years GALA festival, so we are looking forward to the next outfit choice too!

Sam Bangura

Whilst we haven’t seen the official times, we’re hedging our bets that Sam Bangura will be a daytime DJ, as far as mellow vibes to soak up under a beating sun go, he’s your guy and with him playing at the half baked stage you just know the set is gonna slapppp.

B.Love

If you f*ck with funky house you’re about to fall in B.Love, mixing groovy tunes, sexy snyths and upbeat bops with a tinge of 80s magic, if you’re after some playful body moving beats that’ll have the serotonin flowing, this artist is a safe bet.

SUNDAY

MUST SEE:

Demi Risquimo B2B Scarlett O’Malley

When we clocked Scarlett O’Malley on Gottwood’s lineup an audible scream left our mouths, we’ve been obsessed with this sassy red-haired queen whose mixes had us hooked from the first time we saw her, Scarlett’s vibrant energy translates perfectly into the music as she plays with a range of genres and eras, all underpinned by some serious hip-shaking synths. Going B2B with the legend Demi Risquimo, we’ll be dancing to this set from start to finish.

Lulah Francs

Another new-found Broke favourite for your personal Gottwood lineup is Lulah Francs, alchemising sensual sounds, tip-toeing beats, hypnotic synths and unexpected effects into elite sets (no one the same as another) if you’re not at her stage on Sunday you’re missing tf out.

Dr Banana

Go Bananas for the music god – Known for his back to backs with his cat, Dr Banana is something of a music magician with the way he blends those beats. Having played Gottwood 2023, he is back to bring his energy to the wilderness. Catch him at the Percolate stage on Sunday for the final hurrah!

DON’T MISS:

Voigtmann

There’s three things that sum up a Voigtmann set, vibrating bass, ribbety wobs and the occasional deep vocal thrown in to make the music extra saucy, the best way to describe the vibe is two lovers of funk having freaky sex, and frankly we f*ck with it.

Eris Drew B2B Octo Octa

Bursting onto the scene in the early 2010s with her smooth, hazy releases, Maya Bouldry-Morrison, better known as Octo Octa, has become a powerhouse in the underground house music scene. Her set B2B with Eris Drew is one to complete your Gottwood experience, catch our team vibing the night through and reminiscing over their set on the train back to London on Monday morning.
