Lia Rye has recently released a new single called “Habits,” which depicts the narrative of a self-centred individual who creates their world at the expense of others and, finally, themselves. The brooding guitars, ferocious voices, and hammering percussion create a resolute and confident mood.
Lia is an 18-year-old South London-based musician whose music blurs the lines between alternative pop and rock. Rye integrates honest, approachable lyrics through a narrative technique, enthralling listeners with her colourful tales of individuals and how they view the world around them, showcasing calm, introspective themes.
Lia has built her unique sound with diverse roots, drawing inspiration from artists such as Against The Current, Bring Me The Horizon, and Lorde. Lia speaks on the current track, “it’s kind of bittersweet because I learned not to make excuses for inappropriate behaviour,” the artist says, “but I had to reflect on the road it took for me to achieve that knowledge.” Finally, “Habits” is about not caring what other people think, whether you’re the villain or the hero.
The brooding guitars, ferocious voices, and hammering percussion create a resolute and confident mood. The performer has fashioned a style that is her own, with an 80’s pop tint glistening over smashing alt-rock instruments.
The release, taken from her upcoming EP Fever Dream, serves as a type of catharsis, allowing the artist to move on from the dread and desire she felt before deciding to pursue music. Beyond her music, Rye aspires to defy genre preconceptions for black musicians and to represent individuals who look like her, all while expressing her passion for alternative music.
Lia is poised for an exciting and fruitful 2022, having played at top venues around London and receiving encouragement from BBC Introducing.
