DISFREQ B2B Broke Magazine

With a genre-bending sound grounded in electro-techno and the slickest production around, Irish duo Disfreq have crafted a unique, identifiable voice, clearest in their newest release, ‘Turbo’. Hailing from Donegal, Ireland, Disfreq has crossed the pond to shake up the U.S. in their current tour. We caught up with the duo to chat about their sound, using A.I. in the creative industry, and what’s in store for their future.

You’re currently in the middle of a stacked US tour – how do American crowds compare to UK and Irish crowds?

We actually had this discussion recently amongst ourselves, and strangely when we bring our sound to any country (from experience) the reactions and the way the crowd have been expressing themselves are always very similar and the engagement again is very similar.

On making it internationally, do you have a standout, ‘we’ve made it’ moment?

I don’t think there has been any ‘we’ve made it’ moment, it’s more of an accumulation of little magical moments which make us grateful for the opportunities we work for.

‘Turbo’ – chaotic, weird and wonderful. What do you want your audience to take from this track?

To go absolutely turbo.

The music video compliments the track’s playful, dark strangeness – can you explain the music video’s story and your places within this?

It’s the initial lead sound in the track, it’s hypnotic, gnarly, weird and softly aggressive and that’s exactly what the video is, we wanted people to say ‘What the f is this’. And they do.

There’s an industry fear of AI taking over music, but you’ve opted to use a talented AI artist, Bengt Tibert, to bring your music video to life – how do you think AI can be used to aid the creative process?

AI is such a broad world and everyone is scared to use it, Bengt Tibert is very talented In using AI, if it was so simple everyone would be making videos like this, but it is not and it is an art in itself. I don’t think AI will take over the music, it may aid some musicians but I mean, a DAW also aids musicians as do synthesisers/guitars etc etc, it’s all about how you use it.

What is your favourite track to play at the moment?

Unreleased ID of ours which is coming soon 🙂

Ireland is producing some of the best DJ talent around right now. Are there any rising talents from home that you’ve got your eyes on?
