DJ Minx b2b Broke Magazine: Pioneer of Detroit Dance

Chameleon Queen DJ Minx, and her team invited us for a little chat. Catching up on the new single Blocked, her barrier breaking label, Women on Wax, and how, as a longtime icon of the industry, the world and the scene are changing. In her eyes, and own words.

Whether you know Minx for her work with Women on Wax, as a producer, or DJ. You’ll know the kind of attitude, dedication and talent she brings to the tables, her outlook as a trailblazer is unstoppable. In her newest release, Blocked, this unashamed bravery shines. Why don’t you pop it on as you read the interview… it’s one of those head turning basslines, that brings self belief and soul. Minx makes us strut to sweeping sirens and razor sharp vocals.

How are you doing? We are loving Blocked, can you share with us any tidbits about making this track? Any specific influences or anecdotes from the process?

I want to be known for occasionally telling stories in my tracks. I wrote “Blocked” after looking at a post that was undeserving of my time and energy. I’m in zen mode… every day, so no disruptions are allowed. Essentially, this track is about self-care.

The track is bold and unapologetic, like yourself. What’s been key for you building confidence and keeping your energy true – as an artist and personally?

Taking care of myself and keeping good people in my life has been essential in keeping things real. When you do that, you’re not into the drama that unfolds on a daily basis. I do my own thing. I have real people to rely on – that’s my life.

How do you feel you’ve changed as an artist throughout your career? Your relationship with creating, or your perspective on the industry?

I’ve expanded and stayed true to myself. I am now incorporating more sounds and aesthetics in my work. I’m finding unique perspectives in music, and spreading it to the ones that’ll have me. I love everyone. LGBTQ+ is real. I love bringing others into my spaces.

Women on Wax has meant you taking on a new role, using your experience and creativity in a little bit of a different manner. What can you tell us about being a label founder?

Women On Wax is an opportunity to create my own sound, which is deeply rooted in Detroit. It was created to do what I wanted, in my own space, with my own unique vision– which is to express myself and bring similar artists together. My mission with WoW ultimately is to uplift other femme/LGBTQ+ artists by providing them a platform to express themselves and share their music with the world.

On your label, or elsewhere, we’d love to hear who you’re listening to currently? Who can you put us on to?

I’m into all kinds of good music, including stuff from Tony Romero, Pawsa, Hot Since 82, Jon Dixon, Hilit Kolet, TSHA, Soul Clap, Kevin Saunderson (basslines are sickening), Byron the Aquarius, and too many more to name!

You’ve rubbed shoulders, shared dance floors and decks with the best. Who’re you best peers and pals to be on a lineup with? We want some juice.

Being on the lineup with my musical family is always a good time. Kevin Saunderson, Moodymann, Carl Craig, Life On Planets, DJ Tennis, Kevin Knapp – these are some of the realest friends I have out there.

Queen of Detroit, the  House your Life stage at Movement Festival is your baby, with the likes of Honey Dijon, DJ Tennis and Kevin Saunderson previously joining you there. For the UK Brokers, where would we find you down here? Any London haunts or festivals on your radar?

Heading to Europe for the Defected Festival in Croatia and I will definitely be in London in August. Also, of course, I’m looking forward to ADE!

Thanks for spending the time with us! We really appreciate the space you hold and continue to develop in the industry. Lastly, what’s coming up for you? Are you leaning into anything new at the moment?

I’m engaging the next generation of new talent from around the world, and finding some beautiful people out there. I’m also heavy into music production at the moment and will have a new release almost every month on labels such as RDA, Yes Yes Yes, Crosstown Rebels, Snatch!, Factory 93, and more. We’ll also be taking our showcase brand House Your Life outside of Detroit for the first time ever- with events in New York and LA later this year. Lastly, I have a couple of shows in London, but can’t share the news with you as of yet. I’ll keep y’all posted though.  🙂
