In 2020, Dion, a young Dutch producer/dj, dropped ‘Public Enemies’, a single off of his EP with Autektone. Now, in 2024, we finally get the rework of one of his most popular songs, released today via his imprint, Rough Materials. Much like the trajectory his career has traveled thus far, the rework is fast.
The “hard” emphasis on this rework clearly shines through. When thinking about the different qualities between the two versions, I can’t help but locate how strong the bass is in this. It pulsates from beginning to end. I can hear the industrial techno influences that have seeped into his style as he’s developed as an artist. Sometimes, it’s easy to work on a tune until it’s “perfect”, losing sight of the initial spark. Luckily for Dion, the adjustments made on this were all worth it.
This track really puts a focus on Dion as a producer. Now with more experience djing live, I am sure that the energy feedback he has received from his audience in sold-out rooms were key factors of how to tweak this song a bit further. Reminiscent of earlier underground hardcore techno, this version of ‘Public Enemies’ will definitely get people stomping their feet in rhythm and limbs flying in the air within the crowds.
