Intro to Music Theory‘s funky new release “It’s An Attitude” is a deep, organic, old school, and nu-disco house track with an undercurrent of funk and classic disco, the team digs out old sonic memories from their audience and re-creates them in a new way.
Matt Waters and Matthew Busch are artists, DJs, and producers that created Intro to Music Theory. The Southern California-born and Hainan-based pair have extensive expertise in a wide range of genres, initially in the classical, jazz, and freelancing worlds in the United States, and then as electronic musicians and producers in China.
As youths, they initially performed together in Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps. They reconnected over a decade later, in 2017, when they both relocated to Hainan, China, to teach university-level music.
The team describes their collective as “The Reliably Funky, horn-playing vagabond duo on a quest to fuse live performance and house music.”
‘Toot the Bad Horn’, their debut EP, was released in 2020, it was an unusual combination of house and instrumental fusion. These tunes catapulted them to unprecedented success in the NFT and Crypto world. This engagement motivated them to establish their own distribution firm, Unchained Music, realising the opportunity for musicians to have ownership over their work, discover a new road to income, and begin fighting back against a system that hasn’t prioritised artists.
“It’s An Attitude” is the outcome of much trial and research. “The soundtrack is inspired by our favourite experiences spinning records and blowing our horns to dancing crowds, in our attempt to bring a fresh experience to our favourite tracks,” Busch says. Intro to Music Theory has produced a style that is distinctively their own, combining the acoustic and electronic worlds, giving a novel look and feel to the trumpet and trombone spheres with a groovy, funky thread across all of their recordings.
With tours in China, New Zealand, Thailand, and the United States under their belt, Intro to Music Theory is set for an exciting 2022!
