Matilda Mann, 22 years old and one to watch in London’s up-and-coming indie singer/songwriters, has been releasing her heartfelt, impassioned singles and EPs since her first release of “Never Sweeter” in 2019. Mann continues to astound her audiences with her pure ability to express her emotions so flawlessly through her lyrical abilities.
Matilda’s latest release “Hell”, which came out last month, follows on from her most recent singles ‘Nice’ and ‘Four Leave Dream’. “Hell” reveals her speaking about the extremely distressing topic of sexual assault and its profound effects on those who are involved, revealing a level of vulnerability in her music which can only be admired. Influenced by artists such as Billie Eilish, Conan Gray and Wet Leg, the track itself begins as it displays the ample abilities of Matilda’s vocal range with her deep, compelling lyrics which are paired faultlessly with the running guitar riff throughout the track which creates emphasis on her elongated, hazy vocals. Mann uses her captivating voice to build up suspense in her verses to completely let go as the chorus begins and her dominant voice lets go and her powerful message is released to the listener.
Matilda reveals that “I think this time, it’s more than just releasing a song… I’m going to be talking about a really big part of why I write and show such a vulnerable side of myself to strangers. The subject of sexual assault is always something I’ve struggled to talk about,” she reveals.
She continues “So I guess the main way I’ve been able to face it, is through music. I hope releasing this song starts conversations. Conversations between friends/family/trusted ones. I hope this helps people, who have been coping by themselves. Making the subject less scary and open”. This message from Matilda is particularly important and is a perfect example of how movements over the past decade such as #MeeToo have created a worldwide conversation about sexual assault and helped others to open up about their experiences and continue to educate people on the subject. We couldn’t encourage this more!
With nearly a million monthly listeners and multiple Spotify playlist features such as ‘The Indie List’, ‘Pop Acoustic’ and even the Official Mixtape for Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’, there is no doubt that Matilda’s music career is destined for even greater heights than she has already achieved in the past 3 years. Over this summer, Matilda has gigs at various summer festivals such as Truck Fest, Boardmasters and The Big Feastival, so be sure to check her out if you are hitting up these festivals this year and we can’t wait to hear what she has coming up for the rest of 2022.
