For New Year’s Eve Broke Magazine joined forces Cirque De Soul and Troxy for an unforgettable night of disco, dance and drinks. The event gave us a glimpse at life inside the walls of El Dorado Festival as we joined over 2000 people and ventured into the depths of the golden city’s jungle, where the rocky remains of the ‘Lost Ruins’ lie.
The venue space; Troxy is a Grade II-listed Art Deco music venue on Commercial Road in Stepney, London. It was erected in 1933 as a cinema and closed in 1960 to become a training school for the London Opera Centre. Then, after serving as a bingo hall in the 1980s the venue was transformed into a live events space in 2006.
Promising circus performers and production of the highest calibre saw to the stage to see in 2023 with groovy disco edits and upbeat house music. We felt as if our bodies were cast in an 80s Hollywood movie. The space and decoration gave off a scent of Saturday Night Fever which relished in our bones (even after we’d left).
The famed Horse Meat Disco was the main attraction. It established a global brand in its 16 years as a nightclub. In addition to their London base, they hold monthly residencies in Berlin, New York, and Lisbon. They blessed our ears with golden favourite remixes that stuck our shoes to the dancefloor. During the countdown the crowd’s eyes were pinpointed towards the decks and as the clock hit midnight masses of confetti sprayed the room.
Anish Kumar, the support artist, performed his distinct and boundary-pushing music. Since his inception, he has continued to turn heads. The release of “Blackpool Boulevard” on Ninja Tune’s Technicolor imprint in 2021 became a surprise underground hit, with massive specialist radio support including Pete Tong making it his “Essential New Tune” and Danny Howard presenting it as the “Hottest Record in the World,” eventually going on to BBC Radio 1’s coveted playlist.
