Welcome to Catnapp’s closet

Catnapp creates an intense, nostalgic mood with strong sounds by fusing R&B, rap, breakbeat, pop, drum and bass, and other genres. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and now lives in Berlin, where she has been perfecting her Catnapp persona since 2010, constantly mutating and evolving.

Her songs deal with love, rage, and hatred, as well as terror, darkness, and nightmare reminiscences. Her music ranges from simple 4/4 beats to broken experimental percussion with deep, massive pads and synthesisers, creating a unique and unusual sound.

Catnapp recently released her second album, “TRUST,” which features Modeselektor, Aamourecean, Methone, O.L.I.V.I.A., John Debt, and wilo among others. “It was also kind of the first time that I let someone inside my production and creative process. In this case, Modeselektor gave me some really good pointers for it,” Catnapp recalls.

“TRUST” is a monument to fortitude. The last two years have been difficult for almost everyone, and while it would have been simple for Catnapp to allow her sentiments of hopelessness to permeate her creative process, she refused to give in to despair. The Argentinian resident in Berlin was determined to create something colourful, vibrant, and uplifting, and nothing—not even a worldwide disaster—would dissuade her from rousing people to the dancing.

Broke Magazine join Cattnapp in rummaging through her wardrobe. She lets us into her style, and fashion and tells us all the fun stories behind her favourite pieces.

Item 1 – Cat Hat

Tell us a little about this item, how did you come into possession of it and why did you buy it and where?

This cat hat was made together with the artist RYLSEE aka SNEEER (real name Cyril). We did it as Catnapp merch around 2017 I think, and to this date, it is still the hat I wear the most.

I met Cyril back in 2016 I believe. After a concert, I gave at the Biergarten of Urban Spree that summer. He had his workshop there and had come down to listen to the concert. I knew him already because of his “too shy to rap” stickers that were (and I believe still are) all around berlin. I thought he was a rapper because of that sticker but no, he was a designer, and was in fact, too shy to rap 😛 We became friends and met some days after to brainstorm, draw, and chat, to see if we could make a collaboration together.

He came to the place I had at the time in Kotti, we drank some coffee and while talking he started drawing in his little pad. He made many many drawings. Some more complex, big, for possible T-shirts and other ideas. Amongst them he made this little silly looking cat/rat and I couldn’t get my eyes off it. He drew and he drew but I was absolutely in love with that cat, so we decided to use that one for a hat.

What would you usually pair this hat with, accessory wise?

I use it with absolutely everything. That is why I love it. Its smaller than any other hat I have ever had, and because my head is super small it fits just perfectly. I think I already used and destroyed 3 of them. And I still choose to use a new one of the same every time.

Item 2 – Bunny Bag

This item looks super special, there must be a story or memory that comes to mind when you wear this?

The thing about this bunny purse is that I got it during covid times and I had nowhere to wear it to. It was a gift from the Argentinian artist Pielcitta. It is so cute.. and I felt bad not being able to wear it. It needed to be a part of my daily life not to rot away in my closet. So I hang it in my living room and it has ever since been a decoration piece instead of a purse. That way I get to see it every day.

Do most people love or hate this item?

I think everybody just loves it. I didn’t ask my mom but I trust no one can hate him!!! Impossible.

Let us into why you chose this item to talk about?

It is a shirt we did with the brand A Better Mistake and the artists Minji & Catt. We did this shirt as part of the outfit for my new show TRUST. The shirt itself belongs to A Better Mistake, and the illustration was hand-drawn by Minji. Details and general creative/styling direction were made by Catt.

And what do you usually pair with this one?

I combine a hybrid pair of Bermudas mixed with a skirt, also created by A Better Mistake together with Minji and Catt. In the same way.
