Meet the meterverse’s answer to music, MEYY. Launching her new EP ‘Digital Gloss’ last week, the artist describes the project as an answer to the stresses of the technological age. Highlighting the hypermodernity explored throughout this project, MEYY is also releasing an interactive game-like metaverse alongside the EP, a deep-dive into MEYY’s world, which you can experience HERE.
We caught up with multi-disciplinary artist MEYY to chat about her latest release, ventures and life in general…
Hi MEYY, congratulations on the release of your new EP “Digital Gloss”! How does it feel to finally share this project with your fans?
It feels sooo good honestly! To this day I’ve never felt so passionate about a project of mine. I’m just so happy I can share it with people. Up till last week it was mine but now it’s yours! Best feeling.
‘Digital Gloss’ touches on themes of love and technology, how did you find the balance between the two in your music?
I think it’s more that that duality has always existed in my music (or myself for that matter) and this is just the first time that I’ve defined it that prominently. I can get quite geeky about the subject but I just find it super intriguing. Technological developments initially came into our lives to simplify our lives. Over the past few years we’ve moved on to an era where tech is no longer just simplifying but also enhancing the human experience. Steadily we’re moving into a phase where tech will exist in order to surpass being human. This may sound quite apocalyptic but I genuinely believe that some of these technological developments are necessary to reverse and make up for the negative impact we’ve had on our planet. Next to that, it’s important to manoeuvre very mindfully around these new developments. To me, everything that evokes emotion can work as armour to guard us during these times. I believe music is one of the most effective and most accessible ways to feel. As well as love in general.
You have an interactive game-like metaverse to accompany the EP, can you tell us more about the concept and how it ties into the overall theme of “Digital Gloss”?
Of course. The game created around Digital Gloss is an aesthetic as well as narrative illustration of my view on desire, love and the digital world we live in. The EP wasn’t made from this calculated angle, it’s not a concept EP but it just ties into the story very nicely. Thematically the EP is centered around my idea and experience of love. The past 2 years have felt very intense I think it’s sonically reflected in the songs. I dedicate everything I have to love and the theatrical side of that is romantic but can also be so painfull. It’s 2 side of the same coin, there’s no love without fear(hurt/anger/..). Obessive illusions and justified delusion – that’s what the EP is founded on.
Your new single “Tshirt” is an ode to love, what inspired you to write this particular song?
Tshirt was created from a fun and bubbly space. It’s the cheecky push and pull you feel when you are really into someone. The second we figured out the synth theme in the studio that energy was almost palpable.
You collaborated with two artists, TWST & Hinako Omori, on “Digital Gloss”. Can you tell us about your experience working with them?
It was incredible working with them. I loved TWST’s work so I was thrilled she agreed to jump on QT with me. Her voice and aesthetic watermark complement and elevate the track beautifully. Hinako and I met up for a session and we hit it off straight away. She has this amazing calming energy, in and outside a studio. Her soundscapes are less conventional and special, I really like that. Sink Into Each Other, the track I made with her and my friend and producer Pippin starts with an acapella and grows bigger and bigger towards an explosion almost. In the game it fits so well with the visuals of Level 3! I worked with the most amazing people on this project. It was such an enriching experience to work with everyone!
As a co-producer on “Pretty” & “Sink Into Each Other”, how has your production process evolved since you first started learning to produce just a year and a half ago?
A lot of the songs on the EP I started writing by myself. Because I didn’t have acces to the right hardware of software I recorded a little choir with my vocals to form a chord progression. I think that’s why a lot of the songs have such an intensity to it. It felt like I was praying or a sacred ritual when I was writing the songs. Producing around that space was very fun. I feel like I got to understand soundtextures and layers even more. It’s works really well for me to build a more defined soundscape to start writing the songs.
Your previous releases “Spectrum” and “Neon Angel” had a dreamy and ethereal sound. How does “Digital Gloss” differ from your earlier work?
Making music for me has always come from the same center and I think with every project I am able to dig deeper and further. It’s all from the same perspective and it comes from the same space but it feels much richer and intenser to me.
You recently supported Lolo Zouaï and toured with Angèle and Oscar And The Wolf, what have you learned from these experiences?
Doing support shows is interesting because you are performing for a group of people who have probably never heard your music before. I feel like that really trained my performative side of perfroming (lol). Next to all the deepness and emotions, music and live shows in particular are also just a branch of the entertainment indrustry. You need to keep people entertained or at least interested. I think you can only fabricate that much and a lot of it just comes from the music itself (luckily), but I definitely learned and grew a lot.
Lastly, what’s next for MEYY after this EP and tour? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you can share with us?
Can’t share anything concrete yet but my persistent answer to what is next would always be eternal growth and peace of mind.
