Broke Q&A: Chloé Caillet

DJ/Producer Chloé Caillet, a rising star in the electronic field, has returned with ‘Know How’, the next single from Chloé’s forthcoming EP.

Chloé is a renowned DJ, multi-instrumentalist, and producer known for her distinct sound. She was inspired by the music and fashion of her surroundings as she grew up between cultural meccas in New York, Paris, and the United Kingdom, learning piano at the age of seven and joining bands at the age of fourteen, playing guitar and bass. Chloé was drawn to sounds with a powerful rhythm, bass, and voices as a child by the sounds of disco and funk that resonated with her family house. After working in the music industry at a big label A&R and then as a significant figure in the NYC nightlife scene, she was drawn to the more organic side of the music scene.

She is now recognised for her vivid combination of disco, techno, house, and funk, and she has performed alongside some of the dance world’s biggest names. Coachella, iiI Points, Swedish House Mafia at MSG, Pikes, fabric, 3 sets at Glastonbury, Circoloco where Chloé is a resident Rumors, DC10, opening the main stage at Innervisions OFF Sonar this year, and fashion events for MIUMIU are among Chloé’s recent prized engagements. Having graced the booth at some of the world’s most renowned venues and parties, Chloé has a massive 2022 planned, filled with original releases and remixes, establishing her new label XCESS Records, shows for Louis Vuitton in both the US and Europe, and continuing to play at the world’s most exclusive gigs.

In conversation with Chloé, Broke Magazine picks her brains over musical influences and artistry knowledge.

Explain your relationship with music, did your childhood have musical influences?

I grew up listening to rock and roll and a lot of blues and jazz, my dad used to take me to the drumming circles in Central Park when I was a kid, to dance.

Where do you draw most of your creative force from?

My creative force comes from a few places. It also comes through the experiences I’ve lived, the people I’ve met and all the different kinds of music I’ve heard.

The sound you create is described as “disco, electronic, house & funk,” – can you elaborate on the different genres you play with and why you like them?

I love disco as it makes me want to dance and I love the groove that sits with the bass and drums.

I love dance music as it energizes me and cuts through, directly to my heart.

Funk is the baseline to make anything groovy. Add in a funky baseline and the track will make you want to stand up.

Name some of your most cherished moments as an artist so far.

Playing some of my own records live and getting a great response from the crowd, having my mom and dad on the booth with me in Circoloco, playing at clubs and festivals that I have been going to since I was very young and opening for some of my favourite artists in the world.

On the flip side what have been some challenges, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve come across has been balancing my life between touring and getting my creative output. Another really important thing I have learned has been to prioritise my health while working in quite an unhealthy environment.

Your recent release titled “Know Now” is so cool! Can you let us into what this track represents to you?

This track represents a different side of my production. I was in another headspace during the lockdown and wanted to create a track that would take you through a journey.

How do you want people to feel when they hear “Know Now”?

I want people to feel gradually uplifted by the lyrics, the song uplifted me during the pandemic, and I think everyone can adapt it to their own journey.

How do you see your music developing over the next few years?

I want to keep making very eclectic music that showcases my varied musical inspiration always keeping my signature in it.

And finally, is there anything you have coming up that your fans should be excited about?

I have my EP coming up this year which I’m super excited about and playing at some of the most amazing festivals with outstanding lineups. So it’s definitely a year to keep an eye on!
